AssetTrader Buying Guide to Tractors
Buying Tips
Tractors are one of the large investments you may be making. But when you consider their 20 to 30 year life span their work horse use in many different applications, you can see why initially the purchase price may come as quite a shock.
On the low end of the commercial market, base model tractors with 25 hp and no attachments will go for under $10,000. This will increase to $12,000 or $15,000 with one or two attachments, like a loader and a mower.
Larger models outfitted with modern accessories are typically in the $20,000 to $25,000 range. While 60 hp models can be found in the $30,000 range, the standard accessories included in these prices are enclosed cabs and 4WD, very useful options although the do add a bump to the price sticker.
Generally with these prices, most buyers need financing. This will be done through the dealership, financing options will be a factor when you are comparison shopping. It can be a temptation to save money at this stage by choosing only the bare essentials. Cutting out extras that will save you $2,000 or $3,000 will far outweigh the benefit of having a more versatile piece of equipment that will be around for a long time.
Used tractors
There are many, reliable and strong tractors on the second hand market with many years of work use in them. They don’t sit around long on a dealer lot. If you can find a good tractor on the second hand market you should weigh the total price of warranties and finance charges against the long term care costs of a second hand machine.
